Some people feel that Singaporean youths are too materialistic. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Singapore youths are only preoccupied about the latest brands, ipods, etc?
Yes, I think that some Singapore youths are materialistic. However, I think we shouldn't blame them. Its just part of mainstream. And hey, no. I do not think Singapore youths are only preoccupied about the latest brands, ipods etc because I myself don't really do so =]
I think that some Singapore youths are materialistic. They usually would spend lots of money on branded stuffs. Its not wrong to do so, but i felt that it should be money should be spend wisely. Especially when their financial source is coming from their parents. However, being materialistic is also caused by the society we are in. People usually judge others by their looks, the way they dressed. Therefore, Singaporean youths tend to make themselves looks good by spending on branded stuffs.
I think that this is a predominantly world issue on youths being too materialistic and not just on Singapore youths.
Youth these days does not know the value of hard earn money. Majority of their source income comes from parents.Furthermore, perhaps of peer pressure, they tend to compete with one another to see who dressed the best and who can afford better stuffs.
Thus, this cause youths to go for branded stuffs. By doing so, they might feel that they have gain more acceptance in their social circle.
However, there are still a minority of youths that are not overly obsessed with branded stuffs.
I do not think that Singaporean youths are materialistic. Because nowadays, Singapore youths earn money through working part-time and they spent these money on branded goods. Are they wrong? They did not ask parents for money, they use their OWN money. Everyone has the right to enjoy the things on earth, no matter its branded or not. Nobody will say ‘no’ on trendy goods too, people want to look good and follow the trend, and not being left behind.
I agree with what alvin tan has brought out.. Nowadays while we were walking down the streets we can see many teenager selling things like pen and etc and also giving out flyers. They worked part time to earn money. Spenting their own money on things they like is nothing wrong compared to stretching out your hand to take money from your parents. ;D
Thanks all for your comments :) To take things one step further - do you think Singaporean youths these days actually think beyond their immediate needs and have a desire to help the world become a better place? I am not sure if youths are concerned with issues such as helping the poor/ less fortunate in society. Do you have any thoughts on this?
You walked down on the streets of orchard. You could actually see youths clothe in branded products.
The latest mp3s, phones, electronic gadgets.
The issue on them earning and spending using their OWN money DOES NOT change the fact that they do go after branded stuffs.
Isn't that considered as materialistic as well?
Of course spending on what they deserve after earning their own is not wrong but lest they should understand the value on how hard it is to earn money.
Well, their are a handful of youths today actually work and contribute their earnings to help the less fortunate people.
They actually made their own products, selling it and donating the money earn to one of the charity organization.
Recently I just came across a website introduce by XueQi. They are a group of youths in Singapore designing their own tees and selling it. The money earn was sent to help people from the 3rd world country.
So youths that helps the society do exists but sadly, there are only a handful of them.
As a youth, I didn’t see anything wrong to be materialistic. It’s a matter to satisfy you. When you like an item, you will find ways to get it.
True to a certain extent that people judge others by their outer looks, judging a book by its cover, which makes EVERYONE NOT ONLY YOUTH to go for better items to make themselves feel better in another person’s view.
I disagree that youth does not know the value of hard-earned money. Why? As a youth, I don’t feel anyone of us have any financial commitment or burden to be given out unlike our parents who have to support us until we can earn our own money. We all know how hard our parents work to provide us, it’s the same thing when we study. We work hard to get the best results, to be number one. They work hard so that they can provide the best for us as well. The cycle goes on and we have to work hard as well to provide for our own children
Being too materialistic is a matter of whether someone can afford to be so. If you could be, nobody restricts you not to be.
Sadly, this issue appears due to the jealousy that grew on some people when they are being compared with someone else better. Sorry if the above sentence taken of arrogance, just giving my opinion.
No,I think Singaporean youths are not materialistic at all.If you compare Singaporean with people from other countries,we are not too materialistic at all. Many people in US wants their latest iPods and their Harley Davidson motorcycle.
It is not uncommon to see people with a creative zen mp3 player instead of a iPod.It is also rare to find someone with a PS3 or people wearing things costing hundreds of dollars. Most Singapore youths know what they can have and what they cannot have.A lot of youths wants a PS3 but we don't see people working like mad for their close to $1000 PS3.They are not considered materialistic at all if they only go for what they can afford.
As many people know,Singaporeans are "free for all".If you can get something for free, why pay? What is the reason many people don't want to play the most popular MMORPG,World of Warcraft?Because they don't want to spend money to subscribe every month. This shows that Singaporean youths are not obsessed with the latest trend. If you are considered materialistic by simply buying an iPod,what does it take to be not materialistic?By living only with the bare minimum
singaporen youths are materialistic. most of them will get something better than what they already have. i don't see them getting something that is no way better than what they originally had unless the thing is spoiled or out of condition. youths rather spend more to get things of higher quality. it is not good to take our parents' money and spend on anything we want as we will continue on spending more and more if there is no control. however if they earned the money by themselves through working, they have the right to spend it all on their will. maybe after buying something expensive which is not worth, they can learn a lesson from it and be more careful when buying expensive things.
Well. Techonologies keep improving in this world. As things get better, you will have to pay for a higher price, but in exchange you will get what it worth the amount. If everyone in this world stop buying those branded stuffs, what would happened to those companies and designers who produce those stuffs. Have you ever put into their own shoes? Singapore youths too materialistic, i dont think so. Parents earn to provide a comfortable life for their children, if children can get their needs to satisfy, why not go ahead if they can afford them? In Singapore, you have to get yourself updated, if not you will lagged behind the society. Its their money, but not ours, so why do we care about them buying luxuries stuffs, we just control ourselves will do.
How to define materialistic? It is basically when people are more obsessed with the materials for instance, what type of clothes they wear instead of how they portray themselves to other people. No doubt that first appearance is important, the way how people carry themselves are important too.
Why are youths materialistic in the first place? I think it’s mainly because of peer pressure like family status, status in school, the pressure given by others etc. Whether some youths are given a chance to talk depends on their circle of friends. In order to mingle with them, some youths may want to be like their friends and start buying branded stuff like them.
I believe that everyone, not only the youths, will want to strive for a better standard of living. We definitely need money to get basic necessities not only the luxuries in our lives. With all these, we will be able to lead a comfortable life and thus improving our quality of lifestyle. Will anyone don’t wish to have this kind of lifestyle?
To add on, Singaporean youths are indeed materialistic and are only preoccupied about the latest brands, ipods etc. In my opinion, majority of youths today are NOT very concerned about helping the poor or less fortunate in the society. Even if statistics show that more and more youths are concerned about helping out, I think it’s mainly because of CIP hours they have to get and not because they are willing to.
To sum up, we need to bear our principles of life in mind from time to time and try our best to have both things in life- things that money can buy and things that money can’t buy!
I think most of the singaporean youths are materialistic. They always go for branded goods just to show off to their friends. what their friends have they will try to get it too . They will tend to get money from thier parents just to get these items.Outside in the society, people normal judge people appearance, therefore singaporean youth spend alot of money just to make themselves looks better.
Yes! Singaporean youths are indeed materialistic . Look at them, they are usually clothed and armed with branded stuff and neccessities. They want to look good as well as trendy and usually the money spent on branded goods, are way more of than what they can earn and save ! I think that Singaporean youth should spent their money wisely. Some even spent money which come from their parents ’s hardship and don’t understand that money is hard to earn. How can the money be enough to reserve for their future purpose and prepare them for any worst hit economy?
Yes.I think that singapore youths are materialistic. However its not wrong to do so.As for me wearing branded stuff makes me feel confident.Furthermore i think that most people think that they looks good with branded stuff. But i think that they should control the amount of branded stuff they buy as we are still students we dont have the ability to earn that much money yet.
Yes,most of the youth in singapore are materialistic and preoccupied with the latest brands. This is because they just want to look "chic and hip" amongst their friend circle. So most of them just pretend to be someone they are not...(i think so)
In response to Ms Esther's comment:
Most of them don't.The money that goes into the branded items can be halved or cut down and be used as donations to help the 3rd world countries or the poor if the youth really thing beyond their needs and want to help others.
I would say that I have the same feeling like them. I do agree that Singaporean youths are too materialistic. The reason is, many youths are doing it. They love to buy branded stuff, so as to give them a confident outlook. And others will actually starts copying them buying branded goods. As they don't really want to lose out to each other. Well they don't really only preoccupied by the latest brands, ipods. They are many other things as well. For example, a PSP or a Nintendo DS!
Singapore youth are quite materialistic. Most of the youths wish to get branded stuffs in their wishlist. However i seldom get branded items unless i really like it and i need it. I don't own things like ipods, psp etc so not all youths in Singapore are materialistic.

"Are Singaporean youths too materialistic?"
yes, i do agree to a certain extent.
they are so because they want to look good and nice. so the only way to dress themselves nicely is to get all the branded stuff.
but then again, even though branded stuff are expensive, some of them do really are made from good material, which is nice to wear and comfortable.
"do you think Singaporean youths these days actually think beyond their immediate needs and have a desire to help the world become a better place?"
yes, only a small population.
for me, i wont think of their need only for my parents. but of course if they really need my help, i will help.
